Calici Virus At Zetland Vets

We’d like to inform our clients, members of the public and other vet practices in and around Bristol that we’ve seen several suspected feline cases of Virulent Calicivirus at our hospital in Redland over the last few weeks.

Virulent calicivirus is a severe form of a common cat flu virus, which cannot be vaccinated against. In some cases it can unfortunately be fatal.

We’d like to reassure all of our clients that we’re going through the correct procedures and taking all precautions to ensure this virus doesn’t spread. We’re currently not able to treat cats at any of our branches for the next 5 days.

We can test for Calicivirus but as there are multiple strains in the country, it’s difficult for us to tell whether cats that test positive are testing positive for this exact strain.

The clinical signs of Virulent Calicivirus are:

• Not eating
• Fever
• Mouth ulcers
• Flu signs
• Jaundice/yellow gums
• Swelling/oedema
• Changes of skin colour

There is no specific treatment for Virulent calicivirus, but we can give supportive treatment if required.. If you’re worried about your cat, please contact us or your local vet for further advice.

Note: this virus cannot be passed onto dogs or any other species.
